A waste pyrolysis and gasification project in Indonesia’s Surabaya City designed by China United Engineering Corporation (CUC), a subsidiary of Sinomach, was recently put into use. It is the first waste-to-energy plant in Indonesia and the largest project for pyrolysis and gasification of solid waste in Asia.

The increasing volumes of municipal solid waste have brought about serious environmental problems for developing countries including Indonesia. The country generates 5.9 million tons of waste a year, and its capital Jakarta generates at least 8,000 tons of plastic waste per day.

Without proper disposal of waste, most ends up in the ocean and causes gross pollution. The country’s marine environment, marine biosecurity and the health of its coastal residents are all in a “state of emergency”.

The project, with a daily waste disposal capacity of 750 tons, will effectively improve the local environment and meet the demand for electricity of about 208,000 people, alleviating local power shortages. It can also help about 350 residents find work.

Asia’s largest waste pyrolysis and gasification plant has become an eyes-on project of China and Indonesia. Zong Guoying, Member of the CPC Yunnan Provincial Committee, Liu Qiang, Deputy Consul-General of the Chinese Consulate in Surabaya, and BuTriRismaharini, mayor of Surabaya, inspected the project and spoke highly of its leading role as well as the efforts made by the work teams to ensure its progress.

Sinomach has heeded the national call for environmental protection and energy conservation, and is actively involved in the Belt and Road Initiative. Following the eco-friendly growth model, the company strives to contribute to Belt and Road construction and global ecological civilization.

In the future, Sinomach will continue to unswervingly pursue sustainable development and comprehensively implement green planning, green design, green construction and green production, helping preserve the ecological environment and pooling its wisdom and efforts into global ecological and environmental governance.
